Australia's charges against two reality show contestants came after they killed and ate a rat. Though it was not the eating of the rat that caused a law suit. It was the rat's painfully long scream before dying that raised the animal cruelty flag. The 90 seconds it took for the rat to die was to long.
If the two contestants are convicted they can face up to three years in prison.
I honestly can't believe that. Domesticated animals I could understand, but it is just a rat. A nasty, dirty rat that these people are being convicted and sentenced for. I guess if it is animal cruelty that just what it is, no matter what type of animal it may be. The law doesn't discriminate against any animal.
As ridiculous as this seems, where do you draw the line? Life is life, and it all should be respected. Does this mean one should risk prosecution for stomping on a roach invading one's kitchen? No. The difference is in, like the article mentioned, the time it took the rat to die. A mere cervical dislocation is all that would have taken to instantly and for the most part painlessly kill the rat. I would think those in charge of running a "reality" show would be well versed and consulted when it comes to matters that could find their breadwinners ending up in prison. All they would have to do is ask a lab tech or consult a laboratory science manual to figure out one of many humane ways to kill a rat. I'm sure the whole thing was staged, after all.
ReplyDelete3 years for a rat? Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI would not be a good person to decide what is cruelty and what is not. I hate animals. Meat and sometimes companionships is all they are.
Animal cruelty has been an ongoing problem.
ReplyDeleteI love my beautiful dog and I rescued him from being euthinized.
I am so glad i saved him he is the most amazing animal. I am espeically glad that they are doing somehtin gabout this problem
This is so crazy. I think for the first time they are taking animal cruelty too far. Its a freaking rat and I have no problem for the killing and eating. Everyone sets rat traps out and dont get convicted of a crime.
ReplyDeleteRats are rodents and are no fun to have around.
This story is a prime example of how some people have too much free time on their hands. To think, someone actually had the nerve to file a lawsuit for killing a rat.
ReplyDeleteMy question to whoever filed the lawsuit is what would they have done if they woke up and dozens of rats were in their kitchen? Would they pick them up one by one and take them to safety or shot them?
Lets really be serious. People have too much time on their hands.
Theres no such thing as animal cruelty is the animal does not go to waste. You eat it, your alright with me.
